With a very heavy heart, we’re looking for a new home for our much-loved Rocco. After many years as part of our family, an unexpected move abroad for work means we now have to find the right person or family to love him for the next chapter of his life. ❤️ Rocco is a dog who has definitely travelled. Born in Hungary, shipped out to the Middle East, where we were lucky enough to find him in a rescue shelter, and after two years with us, we brought him home to Ireland to continue living with our family. Around the house, Rocco’s favourite place to be is chilling with us all. With young kids, he moves from room to room and will happily plonk himself down wherever they are — sometimes right in the middle of their fort! 😂 Rocco’s bowel movements are like clockwork — up in the morning and out he goes, and again in the evening. He’s fully house-trained and, when he needs to go out, he’ll generally just come and stand beside you to let you know. During the day, he’s often out in the back garden with the kids at their tree house, playing or simply tagging along with them on whatever adventure they’re having out the back. He’s fed once in the morning and has always been very puppy-like, something we’ve been told from the beginning and something the kennels he stays with while we’re on holidays have said too. At the kennels, he happily plays and mixes with all the other dogs and has no problem staying there overnight. We’re very happy to provide references from them. If we’re heading off for the day, Rocco is quite happy at home and we’ll usually just leave the radio on for him for a bit of company. When a visitor comes to the house, there’s no barking — simply a sniff to say hello. Then off he’ll go to find a toy, a bone, a ball — anything he can bring back in the hope that you’ll play with him. Living out in the countryside, we know how privileged we are, and Rocco is completely at home here. With cows grazing in the fields next door and nature all around us, he’s just as chilled outside as he is in the house. Out for walks, predominantly in our local woods, you may get a bark when an oncoming dog approaches, as Rocco is lead-reactive. He’s much better now than when we first met him and really just wants to be free to go over and say hello. Off the lead and in the kennels, he’s happily playing and socialising with other dogs. Rocco has been my son’s best friend since birth — he’s now 8. He happily lets our now 6-year-old play with his long hair, and our 3-year-old, well, she’s only recently become taller than him! 😂 He really has grown up as part of our children’s lives and right in the middle of our family. Health-wise, Rocco is doing incredibly well for 12. He’s not on any medication and never has been. Two years ago, he had a twisted stomach which required an operation. The operation went really well and he’s had no problems since. He will occasionally develop a hot spot, particularly if we’ve been away on holiday a little too long. If one appears, we pop his cone on to stop him bothering it, which he doesn’t mind at all, and he’s usually fine again within a few days. Our move has all come about very quickly and certainly wasn’t something we had planned for. At 12, Rocco is beginning to slow down with old age, his hearing is starting to go too, and where we’re moving will simply be too hot for him. We don’t feel it would be fair to put him through another international move at this stage of his life. We want to find him a loving home where he can continue to live out the rest of his days surrounded by love, companionship and, hopefully, the beautiful countryside he’s become so at home in. ❤️ Hes a real gem of a dog! How to adopt from West Cork Animal Welfare Group
Read the adoption process and the animal's description, then apply with the adoption questionnaire. When you take a cat home you will be required to read the terms and conditions of adopting a pet and sign a contract agreeing to them; you get a copy of the contract.
Adoption fees
Dogs: we ask for a minimum rehoming fee of €200 for a dog/puppy. The donation goes towards the cost of preparing pets for their new homes: neutering a female dog costs approx. €140 and a male dog approx. €100, vaccinating costs €35 per vaccine, and micro-chipping a dog can cost around €25. Re-homing donations are very important for us to be able to prepare animals to be homed. By law once you have a dog it is required to be licensed; the licence can be obtained for €20 from any post office. Cats: all our cats and kittens are neutered/spayed, vaccinated and wormed before adoption, and we ask for a minimum adoption fee of €60 for a cat or kitten.
